What core thickness actually means

A pickleball paddle is a sandwich. The two outer faces, usually carbon fibre or fibreglass, sit either side of a honeycomb core, most often a polymer plastic moulded into small hexagonal cells. Core thickness is simply how deep that honeycomb layer is, measured in millimetres across the middle of the paddle.

The common options are 13mm, 14mm and 16mm, with a few outliers thinner and thicker. When people say a paddle is 14mm or 16mm, they are describing the core, not the whole paddle. The faces add a fraction of a millimetre on each side.

That honeycomb behaves like the core of any sandwich panel.
